5 a side football is a fast-paced and exciting variation of the beautiful game thanks to its rules. In this post we will delve into the essential 5 a side football rules that govern the game.
Whether you are an experienced player seeking clarification for a fierce game or a beginner eager to learn, these rules are essential to fully enjoy the game.
Team Size
Each team consists of five players, including the goalkeeper
Pitch size
The playing field is smaller than traditional soccer, typically (but not mandatory) indoors and has walls for keeping the ball in play.
Duration
Matches are shorter, usually played in two halves of 20 minutes each.
Substitution
Substitutes are allowed on a rolling basis with no limit, ensuring a dynamic game where every player can exit and enter the pitch keeping the team fresh and competitive.
Ball
A smaller, heavier ball is used to enhance ball control. This type of ball is often called “rebound-controlled” and is better suited to the pace of play and size.
Kick-ins
Instead of throw-ins, the ball is kicked back into play.
No Offiside
The offside rule is not enforced in 5-a-side soccer. But be careful not to leave your team down a man defensively!
Goalkeeper Restrictions
The goalkeeper cannot kick back with his feet on throw-ins, the size of the field and the need to maintain a certain dynamic of play make this type of play unnecessary.
No Sliding
Sliding is prohibited because the dynamics of the game and the size do not allow for adequate insertion of this defensive play.
